A Brief History of Veterans Day
The Armistice Day custom which marked the end of World War I, is the source of the history of Veterans Day. The armistice also known as the ceasefire put an end to hostilities in World War I on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month in 1918. In 1919, Armistice Day was celebrated for the first time in American society with parades and open houses.

Veterans Day was created in 1954 by President Dwight D. Eisenhower through the signing of legislation that broadened its definition to include veterans of all wars and conflicts. The original Armistice Day commemorations did not honor the service and sacrifices made by veterans of World War II and the Korean War thus this change was made in their honor.
